Beijing is, arguably, the heart of China. For any China holidays tour to be complete, you must visit Beijing. From China’s Imperial history and the emperor ensconced on the throne to today’s thriving metropolis of skyscrapers and modernity all around, Beijing is the capital of China in every sense of the word. No China holidays would be complete without a visit to Beijing and the sights and sounds it offers.
The Great Wall
Visitors on China holidays may visit The Great Wall 24 hours a day, so no matter what time you arrive in Beijing you can make this your first stop. It is a marvel of one of mankind’s greatest architectural achievements and one of the only structures on Earth that can be seen from outer space. To say the Wall is impressive to China holidays travelers is an understatement at best. It stretches east to west for over 5,000 km. The Great Wall was a monumental effort begun around the 7th Century BC to keep intruders and possible invaders from pillaging the towns it protected. Sections were built separately over time and the Wall was not fully connected until China’s first emperor linked them together around 221 BC to 207 BC. The Wall has been renovated and repaired several times since. The way the Wall meanders through the rolling hills of the countryside is spectacular and stunning to the eyes of China holidays visitors.
Tiananmen Square
Tiananmen Square is also open 24 hours a day for those visiting on China holidays. The Square gained notoriety in 1989 when political demonstrations were caught in controversy. Tiananmen Square is the largest public square in the world and contains a wealth of history spanning the ages. Around the Square are located such places of fascination that visitors of China holidays will want to see as The Forbidden City, the Monument of the People’s Heroes, the Great Hall of the People, the Mausoleum of Mao Zedong, and the Tiananmen Gate. The Square was a main factor in the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China and it underwent a renovation for that special occasion. China holidays would not be inclusive of the history of the country without a visit to Tiananmen Square.
The Forbidden City
Just north of Tiananmen Square, China holidays visitors will want to travel to The Forbidden City. This building was the former residence of the Ming and Qing Dynasties (spanning the years from 1368-1911). Travelers will find that visiting this palace is incredible. The history and the sights and sounds this structure has witnessed are mind-boggling as one tries to comprehend the significance of all the events that must have occurred there. The entire palace complex has more than 9,000 rooms in 70 buildings. It is contained within high walls and surrounded by a moat. Part of the complex has been turned into a museum which houses over 9,000 rare and ancient artifacts of Chinese culture.
China holidays absolutely need to include a tour of Beijing and some of the magnificent and wonderful sites the city has to offer. To have a successful future, you must keep lessons learned from the past. Beijing has much history to tell to China holidays visitors.
