On the fifth day of the 5th lunar month the Dragon Boat Festival occurs, which is also known as the Tuen Ng Festival. During the events dragon boat races occur and the people enjoy rice wrapped in Zongzi. It is the commemoration of Qu Yuan one of China’s ancient poets. The people also drink yellow rice wine, which this drink is associated with the “White Snake Lady Legend.
Mandarin Chinese or the Duanwu Festival (Tuen Ng Festival) is pronounced as Cantonese Chinese. It is a traditional Chinese statutory event and a public holiday in the Mainland’s of China and Taiwan. They call this occasion the Duanwu Jie. The holiday is celebrated in Hong Kong and also in Macau. In these areas the holiday is known as Tuen Ng Jit or the Dragon Boat Festival. During the holiday the name Double Fifth rises and the people focus on feasting on Zongzi. East Asian countries celebrate this holiday as well. The Duanwu is described in English language as the “Solar Maximus Festival. The China holiday is celebrated and recognized by English descents as being the “longest day of the year,” especially for the northern areas. Some people pronounce Duanwu as Duan-Yang. The yang assumingly stands for sun. Wu supposedly refers to the sun as well, but at the meridian or the high moon which is according to Chinese philosophers is the highest point of the sky.
